Schultz Scores Three in 5-3 Win over UNW
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team finished a Homecoming weekend sweep with a 5-3 win over Northwestern Saturday afternoon.
Jenna Maurer started the scoring in the first half, while Bethany Schultz scored twice as the Knights took a 3-1 lead into the break.
MLC dominated the first half, outshooting the Eagles 26-4 with the help of a strong wind behind them.
UNW would generate more offense in the second half, scoring twice on 12 shots, but the Knights countered with goals from Alex Hastings and Schultz to come out with the victory.
Schultz finished with her second career three-goal game, and also added an assist in the contest. The three goals give her 15 on the season, one behind team-leader Maurer, who with her 16th goal in Saturday's game now has the most goals in a single season by an MLC player since Katherine Valleskey scored 24 in 2003. Schultz and Maurer combined for 26 total shots (16 on goal) in the win.
Defensively, Keely Keese finished with six saves in net for the Knights.
MLC improved to 11-5 overall and 9-3 in UMAC play with the win, while UNW dropped to 5-11-1 on the season and 4-7-1 in conference with the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, October 29, when they play UW-SuperiorS in a game scheduled for 3 p.m.
