Women See Win Streak Snapped by Falcons
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end with a 74-50 loss to UW-River Falls Tuesday night.
The Falcons, ranked 18th in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll this week, suffocated the Knights with their defense, holding MLC to 38.3 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers. They also dominated the glass, outrebounding the MLC 45-22 on the day, leading to 20 second chance points.
MLC was trying to play catch-up from the start, as the Falcons jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first six minutes to take control of the game. The Knights were able to cut the deficit to single digits late in the first half, but a run in the final two minutes by UWRF pushed its halftime lead to 38-24.
The second half brought more of the same, as the balanced Falcons kept the Knights at a distance throughout on the way to the final margin.
Brittney Gossen led MLC with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Alex Anthon added ten points.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 4-3 on the season, while UW-River Falls improved to 7-0.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday, December 8, when they host North Central for a game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
