MLC Women Win UMAC Opener
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team won its UMAC opener against Bethany Lutheran by the score of 77-65 Saturday.
The Knights struggled out of the gate, trailing 20-18 with nine minutes to play in the first half, but closed the half on a 27-6 run to take a 45-26 lead into the break.
Leah Nass led the way for the Knights with 12 points on 6-8 shooting in the first half. Hannah Hackbarth made two three-pointers on the way to ten first half points, while Rebecca Engelbrecht made four of six shots for eight points to go with five rebounds in the half.
After shooting 48.8 percent in the first half, the Knights were held to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, but they made up for it on the defensive end as they never allowed the Vikings to cut the lead back into single digits the rest of the way.
Nass finished with a game-high 18 points to lead all scorers, and she also finished with 11 rebounds. Enbelbrecht gave the Knights two players with double-doubles, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Hackbarth and Alex Anthon joined them in double figures with 13 and ten points, respectively.
The Knights finished the game shooting 42.5 percent compared to 33.3 percent for BLC, and played a physical style that led to a 54-39 rebounding edge for the game.
MLC improved to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in the UMAC with the win, while BLC fell to 3-9 on the season and 0-1 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, January 17, when they host Northwestern (MN) for a game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
