MLC Comes Up Big in the Clutch
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team was able to outlast Presentation in a back-and-forth 56-53 win.
Katherine Kogler (Fallbrook, Calif./CLHS) made a big three-point play with one minute to play off a pass from Kadie Drake (Adrian, Mich./Madison HS) give the Knights a one-point lead at 54-53 to win the game.
MLC struggled mightily in the first half to keep the Saints out of the paint and off the glass, as Presentation dominated the glass with 13 offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes, and finished with 22 for the game.
The Knights hung around despite the discrepancy on the glass by playing sound defense, holding the Saints to 27.8 percent shooting in the first half and 31.3 percent shooting for the game.
After trailing 25-23 at halftime, MLC's depth helped wear down Presentation, as the Knights' bench outscored the Saints 14-0 in the second half. Six of those points off the bench came from Kari Fuersternberg (Carleton, Mich./Airport Senior), who made her first three shots coming off the bench and also added two rebounds in just four minutes of action.
Kogler led the way for MLC with 16 points, while Erica Babinec (Onalaska, Wis./Luther) finished with 11 and five rebounds. Drake also contributed to the strong outing from the bench with a game-high five assists.
With the win, MLC improved to 9-13 overall and 5-7 in the UMAC, while Presentation dropped to 9-14 and 4-8 in conference play.
MLC will return to action on Friday, February 19, when they play host to Northland College for a 5:30 p.m. game.[BOX SCORE]
