Late First Half Run Pushes Saints Past Knights
NEW ULM, Minn. – The MLC women’s basketball team lost 79-70 to St. Scholastica in the UMAC home opener Friday night.
The two teams battled back and forth for much of the first half, but the Saints closed the half on a 10-0 run over the final 4:41 before the break to take a 38-29 lead.
MLC would come back in the second half with a help of sophomore guard Alex Anthon, who scored all 17 of her points after the break. Anthon led a charge that helped the Knights overcome a lead that grew as large as 13 points early in the half to tie the game at 59-59 with 5:44 to play.
The Saints held strong, however, executing offensively on the way to a 11-2 run over the next three minutes to build their lead back to nine and close out the Knights.
Rebecca Engelbrecht tied Anthon for team-high honors with 17 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor. Anthon added a game-high six assists, while Leah Nass came off the bench to lead the team with seven rebounds.
CSS was led by Erin Fuse’s 19 points, while Danica Schellbach finished with ten points and 11 rebounds, leading a rebounding effort that helped the Saints outscore the Knights 19-4 in second chance points.
MLC dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-2 in the UMAC with the loss, while CSS improved to 5-10 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, January 19) when they host Northland College for a game scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
