Knights Fall Short of Upset Bid at St. Norbert
DE PERE, Wis. - The MLC women's basketball team played great defense against St. Norbert, but was unable to come up with enough offense in a 58-47 loss Friday night in the season opener.
MLC held St. Norbert, which has reached the NCAA Postseason Tournament in three of the last four seasons, to 35.3 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. The Knights shot 30.8 percent from the field, committed 28 turnovers, and shot 13-23 from the free throw line.
Amanda Burk had a big game down low for the Knights with 15 points and 15 rebounds, ten of which came in the first half. Erica Babinec also had 15 points, while Alex Anthon came off the bench to score nine points.
The Knights trailed 28-17 after the first half, with the Green Knights pulling away in the final minutes of the first stanza with a 9-2 run to end the half.
MLC kept it close in the second half, trailing by just seven points at 43-36 with just over nine minutes to play, but St. Norbert was able to take command of the game with an 11-1 run over the next 3:42 and went on to win the game.
MLC dropped to 0-1 on the season with the loss, while St. Norbert improved to 1-1 with the win.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, November 19), when they in the consolation game of the tournament at 1 p.m.
