Knights Clinch Tourney Spot with Win
NEW ULM, Minn. – The MLC women’s basketball team dominated Crown in an 83-39 win Friday night, helping them clinch a spot in the UMAC Postseason Tournament.
The Knights led throughout the first half, and then started the second half on a 25-2 run to put away any thoughts of an upset.
MLC’s defense shut down the Storm all night, holding them to 26.7 percent shooting for the game and forcing 21 turnovers. In the second half, Crown was able to make just four field goals.
MLC finished the game shooting 37.9 percent, but was able to stay efficient thanks to a huge edge on the glass. The Knights outrebounded the Storm 63-30 for the game, including a 32-5 edge on the offensive glass that led to 26 second-chance points.
Erica Babinec finished with a game-high 25 points 11 rebounds. Amanda Selle finished with nine rebounds to go with five points, while Kadie Drake finished with eight points and seven rebounds. All 11 players who played for the Knights made at least one field goal.
With the win, MLC improved to 10-13 overall and 7-6 in the UMAC, guaranteeing a top four seed because they own the tie-breaker over St. Scholastica, which lost Friday at Minn.-Morris to fall to 6-7 in the conference. Crown dropped to 0-24 overall and 0-13 in conference play with the loss.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, February 19), when they host Northwestern for a double header of men’s and women’s basketball starting at 3 p.m.
