Cougar Free Throws Take Down Knights
MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team was outscored at the free throw line 28-11 in a 76-63 loss at UM-Morris Saturday afternoon.
UMM went 28-34 from the line for the game, while the Knights finished 11-15. Neither team shot particularly well from the field, with the Knights shooting 38.1 percent and the Cougars hitting at a 40.4 percent clip.
Erica Babinec (Onalaska, Wis./Luther) had a strong showing for the Knights, scoring a season-high 26 points on 8-15 shooting from the field and going 8-9 from the charity stripe. Babinec also added six rebounds and four steals.
Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) joined Babinec in double figures with 12 points, while Brittany Jensen (Hortonville, Wis./FVL) and Carrie Fritzler (Deford, Mich./MLS) each added eight. Emily Boldt (Mukwonago, Wis./LPS) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
MLC started and finished the first half slowly, with the Cougars jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead after the opening tip, and then finishing the first half on an 8-2 run after a Free three-pointer cut the UMM lead to one at 26-25 with just under six minutes left to put the MLC deficit at 34-27 going into halftime.
The Cougars took command of the game coming out of halftime, pushing their lead to 15 points in the first six minutes of the second half and keeping a double-figure lead for most of the remaining minutes.
The Knights cut the lead to seven points at 65-58 at the 5:28 mark of the second half, but the Cougars responded with a 10-1 run over the next 4:26 to ice the game away.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in UMAC action, while the Cougars improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
MLC will return to the court on Tuesday, December 8, when they host Viterbo for a 5:30 tip.[BOX SCORE]
