Babinec Leads Knights to Win over Saints
DULUTH, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team rode a career high 34-points from Erica Babinec (Onalaska, Wis./Luther) to a 64-56 win at St. Scholastica Friday night.
Babinec finished the game 10-20 from the floor, made all 12 of her attempts from the free throw line, and also went 2-4 from beyond the three-point arc. She also came up big on the glass and at the defensive end, grabbing seven rebounds and swiping eight steals.
Katherine Kogler (Fallbrook, Calif./CLHS) finished with a double-double, scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds. MLC also had solid contributions down low from Carrie Fritzler (Deford, Mich./MLS) and Emily Boldt (Mukwonago, Wis./LPS), who scored eight and four points respectively and both grabbed six rebounds.
Both teams struggled offensively throughout the game, as the Knights shot 34.9 percent from the floor while holding the Saints to 26.6 percent for the night.
The Knights fell behind by seven in the early going, but clawed back to cut the deficit to four at 31-27 at the half.
MLC came out strong to start the second half with a 9-3 run to take the lead four minutes after the half, and would never look back. The Saints took a one-point lead with 5:27 remaining at 50-49, but the Knights responded with an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to ice the game away.
With the win, MLC improved to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in UMAC play, while the Saints dropped to 7-10 for the season and 2-4 in the league.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, January 23, when they play at Northland. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.[BOX SCORE]
