Babinec, Free Lead Knights over Saints
DULUTH, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing skid with a 65-57 win over St. Scholastica Saturday.
Erica Babinec led MLC with 20 points for the game on 7-14 shooting from the floor, and also added eight assists and six rebounds. Babinec scored 14 of her 20 points in the first half.
Sarah Free finished the game with 19 points, and also added a team-high ten rebounds.
Following a back-and-forth first half, which ended with CSS holding a 34-33 lead after 20 minutes, the Knights came out strong to start the final stanza with the help of two three-pointers from Free.
After the Saints tied the game at 47-47 with 11:17 to play, the Knights surged ahead with a 10-0 run, with seven of those points coming from freshmen Johannah Crass and Brittney Gossen.
CSS was able to cut the MLC lead to three points with just over three minutes to play, but the Knights' defense held off the Saints down the stretch for the win.
The Knights finished the game shooting 43.9 percent from the field, and set a season-high with 19 assists. The MLC defense held the Saints to 33.8 percent shooting from the field with the help of five blocks from center Emily Boldt, who also added eight points and four rebounds on the day.
With the win, MLC improved to 2-9 overall, and 1-2 in the UMAC, while St. Scholastica fell to 4-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, January 21, when they host Presentation for a 5:30 contest.
