Zietlow Sets Saves Record in Loss
NEW ULM, Minn. - MLC men's soccer goalkeeper Benjamin Zietlow set a new school record with 20 saves, but it was not enough to hold off Waldorf, which beat the Knights 3-0 Friday.
The Knights were outshot 44-9 overall, and 23-1 for the game, but kept the Warriors on the outside on many of their shot attempts throughout the game.
MLC fell behind in the game's 11th minute on a long goal by Raul Elias from Waldorf, but the Knights hung tough, despite falling a man down in the 60th minute, forcing them to play with ten for the last 30 minutes of the game.
Still, the Knights had several opportunities in the game's final minutes with the game still 1-0, but MLC was unable to capitalize, and Waldorf scored two insurance goals in the late minutes (in the 88th and 89th minutes of play) to ice the game away.
Zietlow made 13 of his 20 saves in the first half, as the Warriors fired from all angles, but Zietlow and the defenders in front of him kept Waldorf from getting any great chances for most of the night.
Offensively, Kaleb Buch finished with seven of MLC's nine shots, including the lone shot on goal. Nathan Gurgel and John Paustian had the other two shots for the Knights.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 1-1 on the season, and will return to the pitch on Friday, September 17, when it hosts St. Scholastica for a 4 p.m. start.
