MLC Men Win First of Season against SJU
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Monday night, beating Saint John's (MN) 76-63.
The Knights controlled the game for much of the first half, leading by as many as eight points before a run by the Johnnies helped them take a 34-33 lead heading into the break. Galen Holzhueter paced MLC with ten points and six rebounds in the half, while they Knights also dominated the glass with a 24-16 rebounding edge.
After the teams traded the lead back and forth to start the second half, the Knights took command of the game with a 14-2 run to break a 45-45 tie. Holzhueter scored seven of his game-high 29 points during that stretch of nearly five minutes, while the MLC defense clamped down as it allowed just one field goal.
SJU was able to cut the MLC lead down to seven on several occasions in the final eight minutes, but never closer as the Knights took care of the ball and made enough free throws down the stretch to ice the game away.
Holzhueter's 29 points tied a season high, which he set in Saturday's game against Bethel. He also led the Knights with 11 rebounds, helping MLC finish the game with a 47-37 edge on the glass.
Luke Rothe and Justin Eternick joined Holzhueter in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively, and also combined for 13 rebounds. Kaleb Buch added a strong floor game from his point guard spot, finishing with seven points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and just one turnover in 33 minutes of action.
The Knights finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field, and held SJU to 36.4 percent shooting overall and 19.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
With the win, MLC improved to 1-6 on the season, while Saint John's dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
MLC will return to action on Friday, December 14, when it hosts Central. The game starts at 7 p.m.
