Holzhueter Buzzer Beater Caps Win at Superior
SUPERIOR, Wis. - Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL) capped a late rally by the MLC men's basketball team with a buzzer-beating jumper to break a tie score and give the Knights a 78-76 win at UW-Superior.
MLC trailed 73-68 with just over four minutes to play before scoring ten of the game's final 13 points. Justin Danell (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) and Holzhueter each hit three-pointers to cut into the lead, and Ryan Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./WISCO) hit a jump shot near the two-minute mark to set the scene for the game-winner.
The Knights shot well from the field throughout the game, finishing with a field goal percentage of 51.6 percent from the floor and making seven of their 12 attempts from beyond the arc, but were particularly good in the second half, when they went 18-28 from the floor, 4-6 from beyond the three-point line and 3-3 form the foul line.
Holzhueter finished with team-high 18 points and added six rebounds, while Danell was extremely efficient from the floor, going 6-8 for the game and 4-4 from downtown for 16 points. Kolander and Jared Matthies (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside) joined them in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Kolander also finished with a game-high nine rebounds, while Matthies added seven.
The Knights also competed hard on the glass, outrebounding the taller Superior team 44-27 for the game, including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds that would lead to 20 second chance points.
After a strong start by MLC, the Yellowjackets kept them at bay for much of the game, as they held the lead from the 13 minute mark of the first half through the waning moments of the game, building it as high as 12 during that span.
With the win, the Knights improved to 1-1 on the season. They will return to the court on Tuesday, December 1, when they host Wartburg for a 7 p.m. tip.[BOX SCORE]
