Saints Sweep Knights in Sunday Double Header
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC baseball team lost both games of a Sunday double header against conference-leading St. Scholastica by the scores of 8-0 and 12-1.
The Saints used two three-run innings to distance themselves from the Knights in an 8-0 win in game one.
Joel Hering went the distance on the mound for MLC in his first start of the season, allowing all eight runs on nine hits while striking out three in seven innings of work to drop to 0-1 on the season.
The Saints outhit MLC 9-5 for the game, and scored at least one run in every inning from the second through the fifth, including three-run third and fifth innings.
MLC spread five singles across the line-up for its five hits.
MLC held the Saints to just one run through five innings before CSS exploded for five in the sixth and six more in the seventh to win game two 12-1.
Ryan Schmeling allowed a run in the top of the first inning, but held CSS to only one run on five hits through the first five innings. In the final two, the Saints had ten hits and scored 11 runs to put the game away. Schmeling fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss.
At the plate, Joe Janke finished with two of MLC's five hits in the game.
After the double header, MLC dropped to 2-14 overall and 2-7 in the UMAC, while St. Scholastica improved to 19-4 on the season and 10-1 in league play.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they host UM-Morris for at least two games, with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
