MLC Swept at Bethany
MANKATO, Minn. - The MLC baseball team lost a pair of games at conference-leading Bethany Tuesday afternoon, dropping game one 5-0 and game two 13-4.
The Knights were unable to take advantage of a very good pitching performance from starter Joseph Blum (Bonduel, Wis./FVL) in a 5-0 loss in game one.
Blum was particularly strong in his five innings of work, allowing only two runs on five hits. He finished the game with six innings of work, allowing five runs on eight hits.
MLC fell behind 2-0 after two one-run innings by the Vikings to start the game, but stuck around until a three-run sixth gave Bethany the insurance runs they were looking for.
The Knights were outhit 8-3 for the game, with Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL), Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS) and Michael Haugly (Malone, Wis./WLA) each getting one hit for MLC.
MLC took a quick 2-0 in the top of the first inning of game two, but Bethany responded with 12 runs in the first three innings to put the game away early by the score of 13-4.
Bryan Scriver (Kansasville, Wis./Shoreland) took the loss on the mound for MLC, lasting just two innings and allowing seven runs. Joe Janke (Big Bend, Wis/WISCO), Gurgel and Christian Marquardt (Racine, Wis./Shoreland) finished the game for the Knights.
The Knights scored two runs in the first on RBI from Josh Schultz (Antioch, Ill./LPS) and Joel Hering (Rowlett, Texas/LPS). Hering added two more RBI on a fifth innings single to give the Knights their final two runs in the game.
With the losses, MLC dropped to 0-21 on the season overall and 0-9 in the UMAC, while Bethany improved to 19-3 on the season and 9-0 in conference play.
MLC will return to action on Friday, April 16, when it travels to Northland for the first of a three-game set.
