Knights Swept by Westminster
FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The MLC baseball team was swept in a double head against Westminster (Pa.) Sunday, losing game one 15-3 and game two 10-2.
Game one was closer than the final score indicated for much of the way, with a ten-run sixth inning for Westminster breaking open the game on the way to a 15-3 win.
The Knights trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, with Tyler Dorn giving MLC good innings on the mound before things unraveled in the sixth.
Eric Mielke had two hits and two RBI for MLC, while Brad Essig had one hit and scored two of the Knights' three runs in the game.
Westminster finished the sweep with the help of a six-run sixth inning in game two to beat MLC 10-2.
MLC fell behind 4-0 after four innings of play, but a two-run, two-out rally in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to two. The rally was led by hits from Brad Essig and Joe Schmudlach, with Jacob Ziel driving in one run in the inning as well.
Much like game one, Westminster would respond in a big way, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the sixth off MLC starter Jonathan Bumhoffer to put the game out of reach.
With the loss, MLC's record fell to 0-6 on its season-opening trip to Florida, while Westminster improved to 2-0 to start the season.
MLC will close its Florida trip with a double header against Geneva tomorrow (Monday, March 5) at 4 p.m.
