Baseball Wins Game Three against Northland
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team closed the weekend three-game series against Northland with a 10-7 win Saturday afternoon.
The Knights opened a 7-0 lead through five innings, scoring twice in the first and second innings, and then three more times in the fourth. Joe Schmudlach, Galen Holzhueter and Matt Olson each had at least one RBI hit to help build the lead.
Starting pitcher Jake Ziel cruised through the first five innings, but struggled in the sixth as Northland scored four runs (two earned) before Ziel stranded the bases loaded to end the inning.
MLC came right back, however, scoring three times thanks to run-scoring hits from Will Jensen and Travis Kretsch to build the lead back to 10-4.
Northland made things interesting again in the ninth, loading the bases and scoring three times against the MLC bullpen, but James Hemmelman came in to record his first save of the season by getting the final three outs.
Ziel earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six in seven innings of work. He also had a strong day at the plate, recording three hits and scoring three runs from the leadoff spot.
MLC improved to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the UMAC following the win, while Northland fell to 9-10 on the season and 8-2 in league play in defeat.
The Knights are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 22, when they host North Central in a triple header. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Mueller Park.
