Baseball Takes Two of Three at Morris
MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC baseball team finished its regular season by taking two out of three games of Saturday's triple header at UM-Morris, losing game one 6-1 before winning the final two games by the scores of 12-9 and 8-6.
MLC took an early 1-0 lead, but the Cougars came back to beat the Knights 6-1 in game one.
The Knights scored one run in the top of the first inning when Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) hit a sacrifice fly to score Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL) to put the Knights up 1-0.
The lead did not last long, as UMM scored three run in the bottom half of the inning of MLC starter Joe Janke (Big Bend, Wis./WISCO), and then added one more in the second and two in the fourth to get the final 6-1 margin.
Janke dropped to 2-6 on the season with the loss, allowing all six runs on 11 hits while striking out three in five innings of work.
MLC used a six-run seventh inning to break open a tie game to beat UMM 12-9 in game two.
The Knights fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, but took the lead with five runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Janke and Joel Hering (Rowlett, Texas/LPS), and also an RBI walk from Josh Schultz (Antioch, Ill./LPS) with the bases loaded.
The Cougars came back after the Knights tacked on one run in the fifth in the bottom half of the inning with three runs off start Bryan Scriver (Kansasville, Wis./Shoreland) to tie the score at 6-6.
In the seventh, MLC sent ten hitters to the plate, and smashed five hits. Schultz came through with two more RBI in the inning, giving him three on the day, while Tyler Dorn (Sturdevant, Wis./Shoreland), Janke and Morgan also added RBI in the inning.
Ryan Schmeling (Menomonie, Wis./SCLHS) came in relief of Scriver and pitched the final two innings to get the win, improving to 1-4 on the season.
MLC overcame a 6-1 deficit after two innings to beat the Cougars 8-6 in the third and final game Saturday.
Starter Joseph Blum (Bonduel, Wis./FVL) allowed three runs in each of the first two innings, while the Cougars totaled seven hits, but recovered to shut down UMM in the final five innings.
Blum finished the game allowing six runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work, striking out six and walking only one to improve to 3-6 on the season.
At the plate, the Knights pecked away at the lead, scoring one in the third and fifth innings, and then two in the sixth to cut the deficit to one run at 6-5 entering the seventh.
MLC then took advantage of an error by the Cougars with two runners on in the seventh inning, which allowed both Morgan and Schultz to score to take the lead. Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS) singled home Hering to tack on the insurance run to help seal the deal for MLC.
With the two wins, MLC finished the regular season with a record of 9-32 overall and 9-12 in the UMAC, while UM-Morris moved to 10-24 on the season and 8-13 in league play.
