With her gifts, experience, and education, Dr. Delores Heiden was an ideal “charter member” of MLC’s graduate faculty. A 1966 DMLC graduate, she earned her M.S. in teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction at UW-Madison, which then led to a 17-year tenure as professor of reading education and director of the Graduate Reading Program at UW-La Crosse.
Dr. Heiden brings experience in both WELS and public schools to her MLC graduate class, "Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties.” She taught upper grades at St. Paul-St. James MN and St. Stephen-Beaver Dam WI at the beginning of her ministry. Then she taught various grade levels and served as a school principal in the Dodgeland WI school district and a reading specialist in the Stoughton WI school district, before moving on to the professorship at La Crosse.
She led both the Wisconsin State Reading Association and the Midwest Wisconsin Reading Council as president. The Midwest Council named her Teacher of the Year in ’95-’96.
Delores and her husband, Darryl, members of First-La Crosse WI, just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last summer with a trip to the Lutherlands. They have two sons, John and Ben.
